چکیده

BACKGROUND Preterm labor is the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality so it may be necessary to administer tocolytics for treatment of it. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of magnesium sulfate and nifedipine in the management of preterm labor. MATERIALS AND METHODS 100 women with documented preterm labor were randomly assigned to receive magnesium sulfate (n=50) and nifedipine (n=50) as tocolytic therapy. Before tocolysis, patient did not receive any sedation. After tocolysis, if patient continued to have contractions, they received other tocolytic agents. The main outcome variables examined were days gain in utero, success rate and side effects of tocolysis. RESULTS Both drugs were equally effective in prevention of labor and delaying delivery >7 days, 56% vs. 64% in the nifedipine and magnesium sulfate groups, and the days gain in utero was no statistically different in two groups. 6% of nifedipine group and 2% of magnesium sulfate group required drug discontinuation due to severe symptoms. There were also no significant differences in maternal characteristics between two groups. The total success rate and side effects were similar in two groups. CONCLUSION Oral nifedipine could be a suitable alternative for magnesium sulfate with the same efficacy and side effects in the management of preterm labor. پیشگیری از زایمان زودرس: نیفدیپین یا سولفات منیزیم

In this study a comparison was made between the efficacy and side effects of nifedipine and magnesium sulfate in inhibition of preterm labor. 74 cases in preterm labor were randomized to either oral nifedipine (n = 34) or intravenous magnesium sulfate (n = 40). All cases were primigravid with singleton pregnancies and gestational ages of 23-36 weeks. Both groups were similar in terms of age, ge...

A PROSPECTIVE, RANDOMIZED, CONTROLLED TRIAL OF HIGH AND LOW DOSES OF MAGNESIUM SULFATE FOR ACUTE TOCOLYSIS

At the present, many drugs are used for inhibition of uterine contractions, but the proportions of preterm labors are increasing. Although magnesium sulfate is the most commonly prescribed parenteral tocolytic agent, but its optimal use has yet to be delineated. In this study a high-dose protocol for magnesium sulfate tocolytic therapy was compared with a low-dose regimen. One-hundred patie...

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) versus magnesium sulfate to arrest preterm

Introduction: Considering the high incidence of preterm labor and its known complications, and that human myometrium contains receptors for human chronic gonadotropin (hCG) and that hCG can inhibit myometrial contractions on vitro, made me study treating effects of hCG on preterm labor. This clinical trial study was carried out to compare the effect of hCG, and magnesium sulfate (mgso4) on pre...
